The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a 5-year Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) grant to BME Assistant Professor Ashley Brown for her research in “Dynamic microgels that mimic platelet behavior to promote healing.” Prof. Brown has been developing the first synthetic platelet material that can precisely mimic platelet shape change specifically at sites of injury, and this is the first application of C/S gels to the development of synthetic platelets. This transformative material can be used to treat impaired coagulation and non-healing wounds, which collectively affect over 6 million people in the U.S. alone. Complications from impaired coagulation and non-healing wounds are serious and include severe pain, septicemia, hospitalization, amputation, and even death. Moreover, Prof. Brown plans not only to promote tissue repair and regeneration, but also to increase awareness and support for biomimetic material engineering in North Carolina.
