The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has recently announced the 2019 cohort of Gilliam fellows and adviser pairs: BME PhD Student Kristina Rivera is among this year’s 44 fellows, together with BME advisors Associate Professor Scott Magness and Assistant Professor Michael Daniele. Kristina and her thesis advisors join a community that now totals 256 outstanding young scientists and Gilliam Fellows.

Gilliam Fellowships are awarded to Support Diversity and Inclusion in Science. Each fellow submitted a career statement describing how their personal experiences and training inform their science, and how they plan to make scientific culture more inclusive. You can visit UNC SOM news link to read about this award and Kristina Rivera’s own words about becoming a leader in Biomedical Engineering as a Puerto Rican woman and Type 1 Diabetic.

Along with a $50,000 annual award for up to three years for each adviser-student pair, advisers will participate in a year of mentor training focused on cultural awareness. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute created the Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study in honor of the late James H. Gilliam, Jr. A charter trustee of HHMI, a respected business and civic leader who spent his life nurturing excellence and diversity in science and education.
