The UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) (www.bme.unc.edu) is seeking to fill a 9-month tenure-track position in Rehabilitation Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Rehabilitation Engineering track of our department involves basic research in human neuromechanics, development and assessment of advanced technologies to restore the motor function of patients with physical disabilities, and translation of developed technologies to clinics and the end users. Our interests include, but not limited to, prosthetics and orthotics, wearable technologies, virtual reality, neuromotor rehabilitation, neural engineering, and biomechanics.

We encourage candidates conducting research in the areas of (1) neural-machine interfaces (including interfaces with the central and peripheral nervous systems at cellular and/or system levels), (2) neural stimulation and modulation to enhance sensorimotor function, (3) novel technologies and application for neuroimaging, (4) human-machine shared learning and control, and (5) clinical translation of novel neurorehabilitation technology. Outstanding candidates in other areas of Rehabilitation Engineering and Neural Engineering will also be considered.

Founded in 2003, the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique collaboration between North Carolina’s two flagship universities: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. The nationally-ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill provide an excellent clinical environment for students to gain experience in medicine, while the College of Engineering at NC State, one of the finest engineering and computer science schools in the world, offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer.

In addition to the resources of the Joint Department the Closed-Loop Engineering for Advanced Rehabilitation (CLEAR) Core (the former Rehabilitation Engineering Core; http://rec.bme.unc.edu/), UNC Neuroscience Center (https://www.med.unc.edu/neuroscience), Human Movement Science Program at UNC (http://hmsc.unc.edu), Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC https://www.med.unc.edu/bric at UNC) NSF ERC ASSIST Center at NC State, and NC State College of Veterinary Medicine provide powerful opportunities for Rehabilitation Engineering faculty to develop multidisciplinary and translational collaborations across two campuses.

The qualified candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline. Successful applicants will have already established a highly competitive independent research program, or will otherwise possess the clear potential to do so. The candidate must have the ability to collaborate with basic researchers and/or clinical investigators. Clinical experience working with patient populations is a plus. Candidates will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate student education, teaching classes in areas of electronics and biomedical instrumentation and neural engineering. The selected candidate will have a primary appointment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with tenure home in the College of Arts and Science. Lab space will be on the UNC campus. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with clinical departments in the School of Medicine at UNC and will have access to the resources at both UNC and NC State.
