Dr. Frances Ligler, BME Lampe Distinguished Professor and a pioneer in biosensors and microfluidics, is a superhero. In 2017 when she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, she was also invited to participate in Camp Invention: a nationally acclaimed summer program led by local teachers giving ~200,000 kids nationwide the opportunity to become innovators through teamwork, hands-on creative problem solving.

Part of this program’s mission is to introduce kids to inventors and innovators as role models. That’s why NIHF created a team of superheroes, the Innovation ForceTM, that includes Dr. Ligler as “the Inventor of Portable Optical Biosensors.” Beyond being a world-renowned scientist/engineer and member of the UNC/NC State faculty, Dr Ligler takes pride in being a superhero and role model for children who pursue their interests in STEM fields.
