Congratulations to BME Assistant Professor Wesley Legant, named Searle Scholar 2019 for his research on “Single Molecule Dynamics of Differentiation.” Legant’s lab develops tools to better understand living specimens at single molecule, cellular, and tissue level length scales. Dr. Legant will receive an award of $300,000 in flexible funding to support his lab’s research over the next three years.
The Searle Scholars Program gives grants to scholars who are pursuing fundamental, ground-breaking research in chemistry and the biomedical sciences. This year, the Searle Program chose only 15 scientists from a pool of 195 applications considered from nominations by 137 universities and research institutions. Doug Fambrough, Scientific Director for the Searle Scholars Program, remarked “Our Scientific Advisory Board has chosen these fifteen from a pool of the most promising young chemists and biomedical scientists in the country. (…) From past experience, we know that these new Searle Scholars are virtually guaranteed to make major contributions to their fields over long careers in research science.” Since 1981, 617 scientists have been named Searle Scholars. Including this year, the Program has awarded more than $174 million.
