My favorite X Server for the Mac happens to be free, and didn't give me any problems installing that weren't readily answered in the FAQ. Check out MI/X from MicroImages, and do read the FAQ.

MicroImages has a price comparison of various X servers, primarily for Windows. The new one that isn't listed yet is XManager.

In the category of possibly dated information, I believe this message came from the Info-Mac mailing list on the comp.sys.mac.digest newsgroup.

Subject: X Windows for Mac (A)

Hi!

Thank you for everyone who responded to my question about X Windows application for the Mac. As a summary, I just list the very useful URL-s I've got:

http://www.netmanage.com/

Cheers,

Just to reiterate, there's a great, free X Server for Macintosh called MI/X!
It even runs on 68k Macs! But 68k performance is painfully slow; a PowerBook 180c with a 10 Mbps direct connection was many times slower to draw a window than a Powermac 8600/250 on a 28.8 kbps dial-up! The difference was minutes to seconds.
