Networking
If you want to connect a PC to a Mac, check out these
networking links or consider a product (find the one best suited to
your needs) from DataViz.
Plays With Others
There are many ways for a Mac to run Windows, and many ways (like DataViz)
for a Mac to convert files from Windows or many other platforms.
MacWindows is the source for
cross-platform answers.
Also cross-platform, you may want
RAS on Mac for
Windows NT.
Support, Help, Info
You'll need more of this than a Mac user, in my experience as a help desk
consultant, a systems administrator, and a network flunkie. Check out
the testimonials at
Why Macs Are Better. I'm not making this up!
Helpanswers is an online
computer support and tutorial site.
Information
SuperLibrary: Talk to Us
Pentone makes a nifty product called
ModPeek32 that lets you view dependencies between apps and dlls and
whatnots.
The Ping o' Death Page
(Actually, this is anti-help, but it's handy to know what can go
drastically wrong.)
SUPPORTHELP.COM
Windows95
Annoyances will help you solve all those annoying issues. This is as
close to one-stop shopping for Win95 help as I have seen.
If that link doesn't work, try here:
Windows95 Annoyances and
the (far worse)
Windows98 Annoyances.
NaugTy Lies:
Windows NT Lies because if you're thinking of installing WindowsNT as
an improvement, you might want to know what's going to go wrong.
Viruses
There are 19 viruses for the Macintosh, not counting the Microsoft macro
viruses that are cross-platform.
SARC - Virus
Alerts
Virus hoaxes are being quite common. Check with
CIAC for updates
on hoaxes. Another good site for information on viruses and hoaxes is
Symantec's
Antivirus Research Center (SARC). For more information on just hoaxes,
look here for an amusing
version.
CIAC also has a reference on
macro
viruses and what to do about them.
As a consultant, I would recommend F-PROT to PC users.
F-Prot is a free service
of Datafellows, and has
information about viuses and hoaxes as well.
Compression
The old standby, PKZip 2.04g, does not handle long filenames
(Windows95). However, UnZip from InfoZip and PKZip 2.5 for Windows
will.
