The 68000 Macs are the 128K - Original Mac, 512K and 512Ke - Fat Mac, Mac Plus, Mac SE, Portable, Mac Classic, and the PowerBook 100.
If you want to know what kind of Mac you have (which processor), check Apple Specs Online at Apple (under support) for a description. You could also look at MacHistory (download) and other documentation in the same place with file descriptions.
Low End Mac is an excellent resource, and a great place to start (better than right here in many ways)!
The Mac SE Support Pages have info for old black and white Macs.
The 128K Mac User's Group is hosted by Jennifer Huebert.
Hitz Media's Classic Macs
mailing list is moderated by Lewin A. R. W. Edwards. To subscribe,
send mail to
majordomo@hitznet.com and put subscribe classics in the
body of the message.
Macintosh Stuff Page has many links everywhere, including resources for older Macs.
The Pure Mac has a spot for Olden Macs.
If you want a web browser for a 68000 Mac, only NCSA Mosaic 1.0.3, and
MacWeb v1.00A3.2 and v2.0 work. These are old web browsers and do not
understand the newer html tags. I think MacWeb may support
forms, though. Look at the
68000-mac-faq
maintained by Matt Haveri for more information than I know.
He seems
very conscientious.
The ClassicMac has software and information for older Macs. It also has an alternate location.
You can look in The Classic Mac Room for software for that venerable Mac at Jag's House.
MacTreasures stocks old software, and will search for any particular software too.
Guess what Old Mac Games has to download?
Kid's Domain has a large selection of children's shareware for Mac and PC, including a special section for older black and white Macs. If you're looking for children's games, and don't want to be disappointed AFTER making the large download, go here.
Sun Remarketing stocks all sorts of software and repair parts for old Macs, sometimes cheap, sometimes not. You do generally get great selection.
AllTech Electronics frequently has old Apple parts. I've had better customer service, but I don't think they're bad in any way -- just know how to use what you buy, as is always a good idea!
The Mac Crypt had software for older Macs, but seems to be missing. Maybe B&R Computer Services has something.
Macintosh Systems and Applications for Older Macs had software for older Macs.
Storm Impact used to write software for Macs all the way back to the Mac Plus. (If it runs on the same processor as these other Venerable Macs, I suppose the hitch must be 1 Meg or more of RAM and/or an 800K disk drive.)
