Everything You Wanted to Know About Networking Home Computers But Were Afraid to Ask

Don't be so impressed by the title. This is just a list of useful links so I can find the answer the next time someone asks me what should be a simple question and I know I've seen the answer ... somewhere ... on the Web ...

  • HomePCNetwork's Wire Your Home

  • At Home With Network Cabling covers the home Ethernet wiring basics very well.

  • Cable-do - the Ancient Japanese Art of Network Wiring is not only an amusing version of how to upgrade to Ethernet, but also contains some delightful links with titles like "Janice's office gets hit by a car" and "Why postal workers go BERSERK!"

  • John's Closet for SOHO Networking with ISDN, real-life info!

  • Networking 101 for Networkable Mac Games covers different ways to network computers, including how to connect a Mac to a PC.

  • Three Macs and a Printer is the website if you want to network your Macs and you don't know where to start. Also see Networking 101 above if you happen to want to add a PC to mix. If that link breaks, try this route to Three Macs and a Printer.

  • To connect Macs to Windows NT, you may need RAS on Mac.

  • Vicomsoft KnowledgeShare has references on many network topics. From there, I liked The DHCP Reading Room with a review of DHCP servers.

  • Modem Mania

Modem driving you nuts? Here's some of the places I visited when looking for the right init string for a strange modem.

  • Berkeley Internet Kit, Setting Up Modem

  • Tracy Turner's expansive help

  • More Mac Modem Inits

  • MacPPP Modem Inits
