Wonderful Programs for Mac

Ever Evolving

I take no responsibility for what these programs might do to *your* computer, but (except for the ones noted as untested) they work fine on *my* computer

Remember to use AFS to get to UMich Archives if you can!

A Selection of Web Goodies for the Mac:

  • I think the small shareware program HTML Pro looks like the best HTML editor for Mac (after xemacs, which I use).
    ftp://archive.umich.edu/pub/mac/util/text/htmlpro1.07.cpt.hqx

  • I have a page just for this topic.
    http://www.bme.unc.edu/~hope/linx/mac/webmac.html

  • Also, consider the mac-internet-faq for general info.

  • Must Have Programs:

  • John Norstad's Home Page.
Spend a moment on his Home Page in appreciation of all John Norstad has done for the Macintosh community. Then go to his software collection and pick up the latest version of DISINFECTANT. I believe that DISINFECTANT is the best virus protection for Macintosh, commercial or otherwise. And it's free! If you're on the Internet (like you would be to read this), you need virus protection. If your floppy drive ever sees floppies that have been in another computer, you need virus protection. It's fast, it's small, it's free, and it's the best. Just do it!

  • A Desktop reset and a PRAM zap (important maintenance) can be done cleanly with the nice freeware TechTool from MicroMat.
    ftp://uiarchive.uiuc.edu/pub/systems/mac/info-mac/_Configuration/tech-tool-115.hqx

  • Savvy is an extension that adds a picture to the Finder's Get Info box to tell you if an application is System 7 savvy and 32-bit clean. Save yourself from unnecessary crashes with strange new downloaded applications!
    ftp://archive.umich.edu/pub/mac/system.extensions/init/savvy1.0.sit.hqx

  • NewerTech has a selection of handy software utilities.
    ftp://ftp.newertech.com/users/ntech/download/

  • Maintenance, Repair, and Recovery

  • Disk First Aid from the Apple FTP site for Utilities can fix many problems and has the distinction that it does no damage!
    ftp://ftp2.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Macintosh/Utilities/Disk_First_Aid_7.2.sea.hqx

  • If you use the latest version of Disk First Aid, it often helps to use the latest driver in Apple HD SC Setup by clicking on the "Update" button in this program.
    ftp://ftp2.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Macintosh/Utilities/Apple_HD_SC_Setup_7.3.5.sea.hqx

  • MacCheck, also written by Apple, is a nice diagnostic utility with some ability to spot problems. It was written for Performas and I have yet to see it find something, which is not to say it can't.
    ftp://shareware.unc.edu/pub/mac/apple_system_extras/maccheck.hqx

  • Easy Errors lists a description to those MacOS error numbers.
    ftp://archive.umich.edu/pub/mac/util/developer/easyerrors1.11.sit.hqx

  • PowerMac Pruning Page, the so-called "indispensible guide to what's dispensible on your Mac!"
    http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/DEF/

  • Don't use *both* Norton Utilities and MacTools on the same hard drive. Personally I prefer Norton Utilities, but that's just an opinion (probably because that's what I have).

  • Screen Saver

  • Somehow, everyone has seen Moire. The biggest point in its favor is that it works on all Macs and with multiple monitors. There's fancier screensavers, and simpler, smaller screensavers.
    ftp://archive.umich.edu/pub/mac/system.extensions/cdev/moire4.01.sit.hqx

  • Control Panels

  • System 7.5 makes this handy control panel superfluous. Maybe Apple noticed quite how many people used it? For the old MacOS folks, Super Clock puts a clock on your menu bar, with alarm and date.
    ftp://archive.umich.edu/pub/mac/system.extensions/cdev/superclock4.04.cpt

  • Schuzzy allows you to mount SCSI devices and gives you plenty of additional information about your SCSI devices.
    ftp://archive.umich.edu/pub/mac/system.extensions/cdev/schuzzy3.02.sit.hqx

  • Gee Whiz Toys

Every Mac owner should have a few "Gee Whiz" toys, either for personal amusement, or for the amazement of others.
  • MandelTV, a very psychedelic, small Mandelbrot set generator. Needs Color QuickDraw or System 7, and an FPU.
    ftp://archive.umich.edu/pub/mac/system.extensions/da/mandeltv1.0.cpt.hqx

  • Oddities, Curios, and Rarities for Macintosh
    http://www.rainbow.net.au:80/~pekana/Curios.html

  • Where to Look for More

  • I have more sources of Mac information on my Mac page.
    http://www.bme.unc.edu/~hope/linx/mac.html

  • If you want to know what about System software files, look at Macintosh OS Volume Contents. They have a sidebar of nifty links as well, so this is a good starting place.

  • Non-discrimination:

IBM users get my page of random PC links, including a link to F-PROT, their version of DISINFECTANT, except it requires updates more often! They should get a Mac, which would make virus worries so much less, and configuration hassles melt away.
