There is one thing that BME faculty cannot be accused of: having a narrow skill set. Recently, Dr. Fran Ligler wrote a guest post for the NC State News that proves her abilities go well beyond science and technology. Her article, Can Tiny Plumbing Fix Broken Hearts?, explores two biomedical projects that begin with a new technology but end with the body helping to heal itself. Using innovative biomedical products (often developed right here in our department), researchers have been able to use the individual’s own cells to help both the heart and the knee repair itself after damage. The key to success, Fran argues, is an interdisciplinary team that includes scientists, engineers, medical professionals, and financial supporters.
