In March 2015 President Obama hosted the White House Science Fair, featuring outstanding young scholars from around the country, and intended to celebrate their achievements in STEM. Michaela Rikard, a BME undergraduate student at NC State, was one of the students selected to attend. Michaela participates in the Grand Challenge Scholars Program, a national program at colleges and universities. Michaela wants to develop new medical therapies that are personalized, affordable, and readily available worldwide. She has conducted research to improve the use of nanotechnology to detect and treat cancer, and has worked with the military to help soldiers with amputations. Read the White House blog entry here.
