The front page of January 16th’s News & Observer recognizes Dr. Zhen Gu for receiving a grant from the American Diabetes Association. With this $1.6 million dollar grant, Dr. Gu plans to create a synthetic version of the human cell that dispenses insulin in the bloodstream. With an earlier pilot grant, Dr. Gu was able to create synthetic versions of the beta cells’ storage sacs that could detect increases in blood sugar levels and regulate the release of insulin for up to five days. With the current funding, Dr. Gu hopes to improve these particles and make them last longer. This new approach has huge potential benefits in the treatment of diabetes.
