CURRICULUM

A core curriculum consisting of courses in advanced mathematics and statistics, biomedical computer applications, biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation, and physiology provides a strong foundation for biomedical engineering students. Highlight research.

Requirements for Masters:

For students with a strong engineering background a minimum of 31 semester hours of graduate study is required for the MS Degree.

Refer to curriculum summary for the Masters degree for details of current requirements [ for students entering before Fall, 2005 | for students entering Fall, 2005 or after]. Typical Master's course hours include:

1. Required Courses: BMME 400; BMME 900, BMME 910L, BMME 920L, BME 693, BME 590R, or BME 893; and BMME 993 or BME 695 (No Exemptions): 5 hours

2. Engineering Core Topics: 9 hours (Refer to core topics requirements)

3. Life Science Core Topics: 8 hours

4. Graduate-level Mathematics: 6 hours

5. Graduate-level Statistics: 3 hours

6. Electives: 3 hours or more (at least 3 hours at the 200-level at UNC or 700-level at NC State)

A Master's program must have at least 31 credit hours.  Note that the above program has 34 hours since it assumes no exemptions for mathematics or statistcs and no courses meeting more than one requirement.

Requirements for PhD:

A minimum of 52 semester hours of graduate work is required (beyond the bachelor's degree). The student must meet the residency requirements at either UNC or NC State as appropriate.

Refer to curriculum summary for the Ph.D. degree for details of current requirements [ for students entering before Fall, 2005 | for students entering Fall, 2005 or after]. A course of study meeting all department requirements is outlined below.

1. Required Courses: BMME 400; BMME 900, BMME 910L, BMME 920L, BME 693, BME 893, or BME 790R; and, BMME 994 or BME 895 (No Exemptions): 8 hours

2. Engineering Core Topics: 9 hours (Refer to core topics requirements)

3. Life Science Core Topics: 8 hours

4. Graduate-level Mathematics: 6 hours

5. Graduate-level Statistics: 3 hours

6. Electives: 18 hours (at least 12 hours at the 200-level at UNC or 700-level at NC State)
